7 – 11 August 2019 – Kuusamo
Photograph Finnish autumn – Ospreys and Brown Bears are preparing for Winter
This tour is scheduled for August when the Ospreys are most active. The young birds learn to fish on their own and the adults start stocking up on food before their long migration to Africa. On average there are approximately 15-20 strikes per day. In August 2016 and 2017, there were some days with more than 30 strikes per day! The distance to Ospreys is usually 10-30 metres, but sometimes even under 10 metres. Other possible species: White-tailed Eagle, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Common Gull, Black-headed Gull, Herring Gull, Raven, Magpie, Short-eared Owl.
Brown Bears visit actively feeding sites in August when they already prepare for winter hibernation and fatten themselves to survive until next spring. Bear hides are located just near the Russian border. With some luck the bears visit the site with their cubs. Several White-tailed Eagles visit the same spot, and they can be photographed flying in front of the hides. A night in the Brown Bear hide is definitely an experience to remember!
